My Village - Seri Bunian, Pontian

Kampung Seri Bunian was opened in 1924 by an Indonesian, Tuan Haji Abdul Wahab. It was previously known as Kampung Sungai Bunyi Hulu. The village is under jurisdiction of Mukim Rimba Terjun, district of Pontian. It was located approximately 8km from the town and about 54km from Johor Bahru.

This peaceful and harmony village was firstly developed by Tuan Haji Wahab and family before being continued by Tuan Haji Othman, Tuan Haji Md. Yakin and Tuan Haji Markom (is this my grandfather? Have to ask mak first to confirm).

While developing the village (which means chopping the woods/forest to make way for houses/roads/schools/mosque etc), the villagers heard/encounter a lot of funny/strange things like strange and misterious voices. Some of them even met these Orang Bunian especially during the construction of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Bunian.

In 1958, the late Seniman Agung Tan Sri P. Ramlee produced/directed “Sumpah Orang Minyak” that was a hit among moviegoers and a lovely and hit song “Puteri Bunian” was being played in the radio and in the movie as well of course. Based on this popular movie and song, the villagers suggested that the village's name being changed from Kg Sungai Bunyi Hulu to it's current name, Kampung Seri Bunian.

Kampung Seri Bunian was made official in conjunction with the opening ceremony of Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Bunian by the then Pontian District Officer, Yang Mulia Ungku Mohammad Salleh.
